One of the most common lifestyle related diseases nowadays is Fatty Liver disease which often shows no symptoms at all in the initial stages. However as the disease progressses, it exhibits various signs such as weakness, fatigue, pain in the upper right abdomen and weight loss that is unexplained.

Signs and symptoms of fatty liver disease

Weakness and fatigue: An overall feeling of lack of energy and tiredness

Weight loss: Weight loss that is unexplained or without a proper cause

Discomfort in the abdomen: A pain or feeling of fullness in the upper right side of the abdomen in the location of the liver.

Lack of appetite: A lack of appetite and decreased interest in eating.

Jaundice: In advanced cases, the eyes and skin appear yellow

Swelling: Fluid retention causes swelling in the abdomen and legs.

Treatment

Loose weight: One of the best ways to cure fatty liver disease is to lose weight. Aim for atleast 3-10% loss of body weight.

Exercise : Be engaged in moderate or light exercise such as brisk walking. swimming, cycling.

Enhance your diet: Eat more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and have a balanced diet which is low in processed foods, sugar, unhealthy fats, sugary drinks, salty and spicy foods.

Avoid alcohol: Stop drinking alcohol since it is known to worsen liver condition.

See a doctor: Its best to see a doctor and follow doctor prescribed diet and lifestyle.

Causes of fatty liver

The causes of fatty liver disease are as follows:

Obesity: Excessive boddy weight leads to fat accumulation in the liver

High Cholesterol: Increased levels of LDL and triglycerides in the blood contribute to fat accumulation in the liver.

Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes causes fat build in the liver because of impaired insulin function.

Poor diet: Following a diet rich in sugar such as soda, pastries, cakes, fried and processed foods can lead to fatty liver disease.

Alcohol: Heavy drinking over time is one of the main causes of an impaired liver function.

Genetic predisposition: Family history and genetic factors increases the risk of developing fatty liver disease.

With lifestyle changes, following a balanced diet, exercising regularly and avoiding alcohol, one can reverse fatty liver disease.
